When The Door Shuts, Consider Kicking It Open

We have all heard that when a door is closed another one opens. This is often true and there certainly is plenty of opportunity out there. But one could make the point that just because the door closed doesn’t meant that it is shut and locked forever. A closed door might mean that we have to be more persistent.

I was listening to a CD of authors talking about how they obtained endorsements for their books from famous people. The authors on the CD were not necessarily famous themselves. They had simply written books. They had no clout or pull with the famous people they were seeking endorsements from. One of the authors told the story about how she obtained an endorsement from John Gray, author of Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. She was turned down and mostly ignored for months, but she didn’t let the closed door stop her. She kept her focus and kept on asking. Her advice was to stay persistent and patient. For her, as well as the other authors on the CD, it paid off.

As Winston Churchill said, “Never, never, never give up.” There is certainly a time when it is appropriate to seek other opportunities, but experience tells me that most people don’t quit too late. They quit too soon. One “no” can send many people packing or worse discourage them to the point that they don’t try a second time. Before giving up, make sure you have exhausted all possibilities. Keep in mind that good things come to those who persists.

There is no shame in failing, but it is a shame to give up too soon. Before you throw in the towel, make sure you have exhausted all resources. In coaching, I notice what I call the quitting zone where people quit right before the big break comes. My advice to clients is when they feel like giving up is just the time they need to hang in there. When the urge comes to quit, make a deal with yourself not to give up until you have tried at least one more time. You might be surprised at the results.

Coaching Question

Are you quitting too soon?

Coaching Challenge

Are you considering giving up on your dream? Ask yourself what is one more thing you could try and then do it. Record the results of your persistence in your journal.
